Holy Moments Reflection (Fourth Week of Advent)

Dear Holy Family,

So many thoughts rushed to me as I concluded our reading of Matthew Kelly’s Holy Moments!  If that happened for you too, I hope you’ll join those of us who are already conversing on our Holy Family blog, Points of Light.  (On our parish website, click on “Points of Light” at the top of the home page.)

I appreciated the way Matthew showed that “progress” as defined by our common culture is so different than the progress that is truly needed, which he defines as a genuine improvement rooted in the growth of virtue. He laments that our “intellectual capacity to innovate” typically precludes moral character, and this leads to the “culture’s aggression toward morality and dismissal of anything spiritual.”  No wonder we often find ourselves and our Catholic faith at odds with a fallen world!

The good news is that Matthew goes on to point out the amazing effects that our Holy Moments can have on others, and how we can literally change the world.  I felt empowered, encouraged, and inspired as I finished the book.

Let’s keep our Holy Moments conversation going beyond Advent.  I have more thoughts and questions to share, so I hope you’ll join us on the Points of Light blog.

In the peace of Christ,

Bob

    Bob,
I finished Holy Moments reading more than a week ago and in reflection, the thing that struck home for me were his ten words "You were made in the image of God. Act Accordingly!". I do act accordingly; ..... sometimes. More often that not there are many more opportunities to act accordingly and Holy Moments is a way to do this for me. It is the New Year and a 2023 resolution for me. Regards, Jim

Hi, Judy. Yes, it's a shame how neglectful so many are of the "Christ" in "Christmas." However, just yesterday someone mentioned to me that they heard a public grade school choir singing actual Christian-themed Christmas carols at a public performance. Perhaps the "reason for the season" isn't completely lost in our fallen world.

I appreciate reading your comments every week on page 2 of our Holy Family weekly bulletin, Bob. Thank you. Thanks also for the opportunity to read Matthew Kelly's book, Holy Moments. I have been dismayed this Christmas season at the lack of meaning our society has afforded this Christian event. It seems that in our effort to avoid offending anyone, the miracle of the meaning of the birth of Christ is completely ignored. A stranger to our American society watching the "Christmas parades, the Christmas movies and special programs wouldn't have a clue about the real meaning of Christmas. Perhaps "Holy Moments" will be the beginning of a clear understanding of what Christ is still trying to teach us.
