Holy Moments: Preaching the Gospel

Dear Holy Family,

Regarding our Christian mission to spread the Good News, there is an old saying that goes, “Preach the Gospel.  If necessary, use words.”  One of Matthew Kelly’s main points from Holy Moments is about the amazing effects that our Holy Moments can have on others and how that can literally change the world.  Think about that for, well, a moment.  By practicing our own versions of Holy Moments, we are preaching the Good News.  Thus, without saying a word, we are modeling our Catholic faith and we become the evangelists that we are called to be.  Who knew it could be so simple to be an evangelist?  In his book, Kelly provides some “everyday examples” of Holy Moments.  Among others:

  • Control your temper, even if you’re fully justified losing it.
  • Pray before making a decision.
  • Encourage someone, coach someone, praise someone, affirm someone.
  • Be patient with that person who drives you crazy.
  • Give whoever is in front of you your full attention.
  • Begin each day with a short prayer of gratitude.
  • Overlook an offense against you.
  • Go out of your way to make the new person feel welcome.
  • Take an interest in someone: Ask him about the best part of his day; ask her about her dreams.
  • Give someone a life-changing book.
  • Write a love letter.

In the peace of Christ,
